The return of a soul singing queen. Jazmine Sullivan released her 3rd full-length album on 1/13/15. Many remember her from hits like “Bust Your Windows” and “Need U Bad”, which showcased pain through heartbreak drawing from obvious influences a la Mary J. Blige. Although ‘Reality Show’ does take a new direction, fans of Sullivan’s catalogue will not be disappointed. So many highlights like “Mascara” and “Dumb” have myself and I am sure fans of this phenomenal talent bobbing our heads in rush hour traffic. The jazz intro to “Brand New” leads into a confident anthem that one should never forget knowing where they came from before that lucky career break. “Let It Burn” will be played at many spring and summer picnics that will have everyone swaying to its smooth and airy flow. “If You Dare” is a song where Sullivan dives into a different and compelling lower vocal range. It’s reaffirming message tells us that we should never give up on our own dreams.
“Dumb” was the lead single released in May of 2014 and received a very warm reception at radio. The same day it was released, the infamous elevator incident between Solange and Jay-Z occurred. This did not mean her comeback was doomed, but social media was a buzz with these other pop culture fixtures and caused the single to fizzle. A strategic release at the top of 2015 means that a fresh new year gives this album the platform it deserves. You can learn so much about her absence from the music scene due to a personal romantic relationship in a recent interview with 105.1 ‘The Breakfast Club’ out of New York by clicking here:
